Last night, I went to a screening of “Gasland 2” for work.
While the film argued against the natural gas drilling industry and its potential harms to the environment and human health, it was a minor point that resonated with me.
We could be seeing the end of oil.
For my entire life, cars have been fueled with gasoline.
I remember going with my parents to refuel their cars. I remember when gas was less than $1 a gallon. I remember when I was allowed to move the fuel nozzle from the kiosk to the gas tank for the first time. I remember when I could fill my car’s tank for less than $20 in high school and still have enough money left over to get lunch.
While the last few years have seen a recharge in the market for electric cars, we’ll still have to figure out a way to make the electricity to charge the batteries in those cars.
Coal production and mining are decreasing.
But natural gas mining is booming. Check out this map from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Natural gas is plentiful if we decide it’s worth mining.
The Republic Services fleet in York County is working its way toward compressed natural gas trucks.
Will my kids take their cars to CNG stations? Will I?
